About the company: We make a lot of natural resources to make plastic and we throw it away. We are supposed to pick it up and recycle it, but in reality, it doesn’t happen. A small bottle of plastic bottle will take 200 years to get decompose when it is not recycled properly. Almost over 90% globally don’t get recycled, they get thrown away. They are taken to the landfills, with sunlight it breaks down and reaches the soil. And it reaches the water. So plastic is not only an environmental or planet issue, it’s also a people issue right now because the waste is also sweeping into food right now. So it’s very important to take a decision on that and how we are using the materials. We are doing and at a fundamental level, we are making sure that it doesn’t digest plastic for sure. So nature’s system is very circular. Somebody’s waste gets processed and becomes bio for somebody else, so that’s how nature is done. And the best way to do that is to create no waste at all. So that’s what we do at Clean label. Reuse sort of a company, so instead of packing in plastics, we pack most of our products in reusable containers, consumers pay a small deposit and get it to them. They give it back to us, clean it, sterilize it and get it back to them.
How it is sterilized: We use a lot of in-house mechanisms that we have. We have hot water systems, a natural method of bubble soaps, and we use natural neem oil to make sure that everything is sterilized. In quick time we will invest in larger automatic machines but as of now, we are using it manually.
How safe is it: Pretty safe, we have a strict stringent. My family eats from there, we have been experimenting with this for the last 1 and a half years. We have been testing this model for the last few years for about 150 customers. It has been so safe and people love it.
Deposit: When you buy a water bottle, you don’t need the water bottle, you just need the water. They are also transferring the bottle to you, it’s your responsibility to do whatever with it. The best what you do is, you consume it and you throw it away. In our case, the packaging is not owned by the consumer but we own the packaging.
How much is the deposit? It can be anywhere between 40 rupees and 100 rupees because we use materials like glass bottles, organic cotton bags, and steel canisters. Steel canisters may go up to 70-80 rupees, bottles and bags cost 40 bucks, and it’s 100% refundable. End of the day an average household buys 50 products and for each of the packaging you pay 1 or 2 rupees, so technically when it is accounted for in a month, you are paying 50×2 equal to 100 rupees. So technically we as consumers are funding the plastic waste. We spend 2000 rupees a year just funding the plastic waste. So what if we take the 2000 rupees, give it to us as deposits and you never have to pay one more rupee for packaging. So what you need is for the product and that’s exactly is what we do. We make sure you are getting the best products and none of the plastic waste.
